Doctors and pink eye

On Wednesday (yes, the day of our massive blizzard), I ventured out to the doctor's office with all 3 kids. I tell ya, it was a nerve-wracking drive down to Rock Hill Pediatrics, but somehow we made it on the trecherous roadways. ;)

On Tuesday, Mary Mac's eye started to look really red, she had been playing with her make-up that day, so I just thought maybe she had gotten some in her eye and it was irritating it. When she woke up on Wednesday I knew it was more than that. It was completely red with yucky stuff oozing out of the corners. I was also concerned that she may have a UTI because she had been having numerous accidents the past few days. I called and got an appt, unfortunately Dr. Edwards didn't have any open appts, so we had to see one of the other doctors in the practice. Not unusual for sick visits and we've always been very happy with any of the doctors we've seen. Well, not this time.

We arrived to our appt and were called back in record time, I had barely gotten everyone out of their coats when the nurse was calling her. This particular nurse was very unfriendly. She took us back to our room and started asking what the problems were. I told her what was going on and also mentioned that we were supposed to come back for MM in a couple weeks to have some blood drawn to check iron levels. I asked that since we were already there and her chart was already out if we could do that while we were here too. She snapped, "Well, you'll have to talk to the doctor about that," and walked out. While we are sitting there waiting MM says she really needs to use the bathroom, so I stick my head out of the room to see if the nurse is out there. Of course I can't find anyone for 5 minutes. She finally walks by and I say, "She really needs to use the restroom, is she going to need to do a urine sample?" "Probably" is all she snaps as she walks right by me. Fortunately the doctor was walking up to our room then, so I kept my mouth shut with this heinous witch. We meet with the doctor and he confirms that MM does in fact have Pink Eye. Let me just say, I'm not sure why this man became a pediatrician. He has not interacted once with Mary McLean except to look in her ears, eyes, and listen to her chest. In fact, I don't think he said more than 3 words to her the whole time. I ask about the blood draw and he says, "I think we have enough problems going on here, we don't need to add something else, you can see Dr Edwards about that at your next appt." Well, thank you so much Dr. Personality. I then mention that she really needs to use the restroom and ask if we can go ahead and do the urine sample, he instructs me on what to do (thank you, I've never actually given a urine sample myself, moron) and I take MM to the bathroom. We come back to our room and wait 10 more minutes for the nurse to come in and take the sample, she finally comes in with an empty cup and says, "Ok, we need to to go pee pee in here." I look at her dumbfounded and say, we already did that, here's the sample. I had told her almost 30 mintues before this that MM really had to go to the bathroom. Turns out she did not have a UTI, so not sure what is going on with the accidents.

We started the eye drops immediately and her eyes are looking 10000% better already. If I ever have to go back for a sick appointment and they give me this particular doctor, I may say, "No thank you," and just go to the Urgent Care instead. If we didn't like Dr. Edwards so much, I would switch practices altogether! Grrrrr!
ps- when we took Emma for her appt yesterday, I asked Dr Edwards about the blood draw, she was more than willing to do that and save us another trip down there. Turns out MM's iron count was even lower than it was in December. We are on iron drops right now and will have it checked again at the end of the month at Andrew's 6-year check up.
